Desert Drive

(Despite what Blogger says, this was written on August 13, 2007. I just haven't been near an internet connection to post this).

Today we drove from San Diego to Phoenix.
What, doesn’t everyone want to be in Arizona in August?
On the way out of San Diego the temperature reached 103, and as we drove into the desert, it climbed



And yes, I know it’s blurry, but you try taking sharp pictures close up in a bouncing car.














I’m not a gambler but at this point I was ready to bet on 120. It got to



… and stopped. Darn.

After we climbed through the mountains, we dropped to…



BELOW sea level.







Lots of really long trains run through the desert.




But they’re not immune from graffiti

we had dinner in Gila Bend, at the



It’s very Fifties and reminds me of an old science fiction movie. The walls are decorated with photos and pictures of outer space



At 10:22 pm…



And we stopped for gas at a station that has a very high opinion of itself:
