From there we flew into Hartford, Connecticut. The weather was warm and a little humid. We drove through Connecticut and Massachusetts into New Hampshire. It was an uneventful drive, although in Holyoak, Massachusetts, we encountered this motorcycle parade. Main Street was pretty much blocked off and they had police escorts at the beginning and end. People pulled over to watch, and there were even people sitting by the side of the road in folding chairs. We estimated there were about six hundred motorcycles.

We stopped along the way to buy supplies (snack food and things for the car), and stopped along a stream to take pictures,

but mostly we drove.

We were very tired, since we only got a couple hours sleep on the plane and had been up for about thirty six hours and mostly just wanted to find a nice place to sleep.

We found it in Peterborough, NH. But here's the next installment of our southwestern adventure).

We got up early (did you know there was life before 7am???) to see Arches National Park by sunrise. We were a little late for the pre-sunrise beautiful light, but since it was cloudy the light was a little sporadic anyway. We saw the sunrise, and we saw the light on the rocks.

The rocks are AMAZING. Great red color, lots of geological stripes, and these great carved shapes caused by many years of water and wind.

I didn’t get any pictures you haven’t already seen a million times, so I’ll just show you this one, which I’m pretty sure you HAVEN’T seen a million times:

I guess, seen one arch, you’ve seen them all:

I did find a beetle, but this guy was cuter:

From Arches we drove westward to Capitol Reef.

So we came back after looking around the visitors center, and some other visitors very kindly pointed and pointed until I could finally see them. Sometimes I’m such a dummy…

Near the visitors center is an old house that’s been turned into a little shop and bakery. It’s run by Mormons, so the there are lots of handmade items inside, as well as very tempting foods. We bought two pies for later consumption.

Then we went into the park:

The wild photographer stalking his prey:

See those dark clouds behind the rock? They were turbo clouds – the rain just CRASHED down. Just a few yards to the picnic area and we were totally drenched. So was the path:

Okay, it doesn’t look like such a big deal, but really, this was after just a minute or so of rain.

Anyway, we sat under the awning and ate our pies.

The rain stopped, we finished our pie, and then headed back out of the canyon the same way we went in.

and continued on to Beaver, Utah.

All righty. We came here for two reasons – one, our favorite singer/songwriter John Stewart gave a concert here almost exactly ten years ago which neither of us went to (darnit). But second, there’s a narrow gauge railroad that runs from Chama to Antonito, Colorado, and we decided to ride it. It’s called the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. It was built around 1880 and is still very authentic to that period.

Before we boarded the train, though, we got up at about 4am to watch the total lunar eclipse. We were staying in a little cabin in Chama and set up our cameras in the parking lot. There were lights all around us on all the cabins, but it doesn’t seem to have affected the photos. This was my best one:

When it was over, we went back to bed for a couple hours, and got up again to ride the train.

We boarded in Chama, and took off at about 10am. Here’s the front of the train from the back:

And the back of the train from the front:

And from the inside:

The scenery was beautiful.

At Cumbres Pass, at 10,000 feet, we stopped to fill the water tank. A little later, going around this bend, the pilot cleared the pipes by blowing the steam out. Like this:

Apparently there was a guy named Max Pacheco who worked on the restoration of the tracks in the ‘80s. On his lunch breaks, wherever he was, he would carve his name into a tree. It’s hard to hit a tree from a moving train, so I only got one photo:

This guy followed behind us the entire way. He’s a fire train, and he’s there for the sole purpose of putting out any flames that might be started by the coal that runs the train:

In the olden days, they communicated by telegraph. Occasionally outside the train you’ll see telegraph poles in various stages of disrepair and tangled wires.

With the advent of telephone, the engineer could now communicate with the station. He would stop the train, disembark, and make his phone call here:

These guys were close to the tracks when we came by, and apparently we startled them.

We stopped in Osier for lunch and also to switch engines with the train that started in Antonito. The welcoming committee:

<img What a wonderful city! Well, the plaza part, which is where we spent our time. It’s just what I thought it would be, just oozing creativity and art. Tons of shops selling jewelry, pottery, paintings, sculptures, clothing, souvenirs… And lots of food. Hoo boy, the food!!!

We arrived in time for the wonderful sunset light. So I saw this:

which looked like this the next morning:

I had lots of fun taking more abstract photos rather than scenics. From there we visited the Gila cliff dwellings, which are caves in the rocks where people of the Mogollon culture lived from the 1280s through the early 1300s. I used Li'l Bit of Heaven Fibers Merino Yarn and I love how they feel, but after the first wearing the bottoms had already started felting. They fuzzed a bit around the shoe area too. I don’t know how long they’ll last, and I guess it’s because they’re 100% merino with no added nylon or anything for strength, but I’ll wear ‘em till they drop. They feel like, well, a Li’l Bit of Heaven.

So that’s the backlog. And now, back to our regular programming…

Suddenly I seem to have several cable projects OTN, and it’s been bothering me more and more that I can’t figure out how to read the symbols for the different types of cables and know what to do without also looking at the instructions. But then, after tinking five or six rows because of a cable crossed wrong, I realized that it was less important to be able to read the chart than it was to read the cables themselves, and that’s made a huge difference. No more mistakes, and less time looking back and forth on the pattern.

Next I’d like to learn how to make the cables without a cable needle (or in this case, tapestry needle). I did it once on a very simple cable pattern, but the ones I’m doing now have several types of cables in each pattern and maybe it would be too confusing to try to learn a new technique where there are so many variables. Unless I see a really good explanation or tutorial.

So here. Meet Calla. Isn’t she gorgeous? Here’s what mine looks like:

So far.

I’m using the same yarn as the sample, Dale of Norway Svale, and boy is it yummy. It’s splitty, so I have to watch what I’m doing, but it’s soft and creamy and luscious, and I can’t wait to feel it on my skin. It’s so yummy, in fact, that I might actually get it finished before something else grabs me around the neck and makes me knit it.

Maybe.

Life is too short to knit one thing at a time.

February

I'm realllly late posting this, but I wanted to show the package I received from Kathi Young in the Socks in a Bag exchange by the TSoxKnitalong group.

Well, it doesn't look as good in a photo as it does in person. There's a wonderful bag with shimmery gold embroidery and GORGEOUS Bearfoot Mountain Colors yarn in Huckleberry colorway, beautiful stitch markers in a tiny purple heart box, a purple accessories bag and two yummy chocolate bars that unfortunately (or not) didn't live long enough to be included in the photo. Oh, and the pattern for Leaf Lace Socks, which you can see peeking out underneath everything. Thank you sooooooo much, Kathi -- you made my day!!!

So while I'm here, I also wanted to show you this scarf I'm making. I wanted to find a lacy pattern to teach at Michaels, and I found a lacy leaf pattern that looks great scarfwise. I'm using Patons SWS yarn, which has intrigued me ever since I first saw it. This is the Natural Pink colorway -- isn't it pretty?

I love working with this yarn. It's soft. It's not twisted, so it has a sort of fluffy quality. It doesn't tink well, but it feels great. I think it's going to be really lovely when it's blocked. Which I've never done before, so I guess I'll get to learn soon.

Yikes!

My FIRST First Socks

Not to be confused with my SECOND first socks, which are the first pair I FINISHED and which were given to my sister for her birthday. My FIRST first pair are the first pair of socks I ever started, using real sock yarn (On Line brand, color... hard to tell from the label. Maybe 794, maybe Summer, maybe Purple B. I don't know.)

Anyway. I used the pattern that came with them, from On Line. And I'm not an expert, but I think I don't like them a whole lot. First, when I bought the yarn, I wasn't aware of all the really yummy yarn out there, and this isn't really yummy. It's not bad, but it's not inspiring either. The saleslady told me I should use size 3 needles with this yarn, and she lied. The fabric is too loose. The heels are very baggy and the toes are way too pointy (the pattern said to decrease down to eight stitches before I kitchenered. I think that's too few. It doesn't help that my kitchenering sucks, but I'll practice before I get to that point on my first second pair).

So here's the On Line socks:

And here's a picture of my first second pair (this is theknitter.com's sock of the month club offering for December 2006, Elegant Cable Socks using Regia Silk color 070, which is greener than it looks in the photo).

I LOVE the Regia. They eat MY weight in cat food every day.

I'd like to show you a picture of their big sister Raven but I don't have one handy. Soon. Be patient. She's worth waiting for.

The first time I ever heard the word “blog” was several years ago when my stepmom suggested I visit her daughter’s. Amy’s a writer and I enjoyed reading what she wrote, but I had no idea there was more than one reading involved. I’m going to have to see if she still has hers. Anyway, I thought the word “blog” was silly and since I never have anything to say I knew I would never have my own.

But since I’ve gotten so obsessed with knitting and looming, I have visited many wonderful and inspiring blogs, and I have to say they’ve given me something to aim for. So here I am, still with nothing to say, but I’m going to say it on the Web.
